About Us

We are a non-partisan non-profit advocacy coalition of residents of the Washington DC area, Black community leaders and seasoned educators who are committed to enabling Black children to thrive in and beyond schools.

We work primarily in Montgomery County, Maryland - the largest and most diverse county in the state of Maryland with over 200 schools serving over 160,000 students - 35,000 of whom are Black.

***

The mission of the BCEE is to free every Black MCPS student to achieve and to be their personal best both within and outside of schools that are safe, equitable, and supportive of their well-being.

***

Our goal is to move school systems and leaders from merely measuring achievement and equity "gaps" to closing them rapidly and permanently.

***

We combine academic, organizing, and practical expertise with the lived experiences of Black students, parents, guardians and teachers to address and eliminate racism, anti-Blackness, and the damaging inequities which enable those gaps to persist.

We are a 100% volunteer-run non-profit organization.

The BCEE community has grown to include over 800 Black MCPS students, parents and guardians, staff, and administrators, as well as a diverse group of volunteers and supporters.
